A Forgotten Health Emergency

In the shadow of conflict, the Central African Republic is grappling with a decades-long health crisis. Here, in a country of 5.5 million people, access to healthcare is all but impossible and life expectancy is little more than 54 years. For years, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) repeated calls for more action from governments and humanitarian actors. Yet, the situation worsens, and our teams and the communities we serve are left wondering: Where is everyone?

As people continue to flee the conflict in Sudan, more than 358,000 refugees have arrived at the border town Adré, in eastern Chad. Refugee camps are being built, but the shelter and basic facilities available in the camps are wholly inadequate to meet the needs of the incoming people. Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is calling on the international community and humanitarian organisations to urgently address essential needs for people seeking safety from the conflict, to avoid a catastrophic situation.

Fleeing conflict, hundreds of thousands face hardship and disease in overcrowded camps in White Nile State

More than 140,000 people, mostly South Sudanese women and children fleeing from Khartoum, have newly arrived in White Nile state since conflict broke out in Sudan and are now facing huge unmet needs for food, shelter, healthcare and water and sanitation in 10 camps that host around 387,000 people, according to the local authorities. MSF teams working in some of these camps are overwhelmed with tens of new daily cases of suspected measles and malnutrition among children.
