In Sudan, where military operations have now entered their fifth month, MSF has been supporting the Turkish Hospital in Khartoum since mid-May. Although there was a risk that MSF would twice have to end it support to this hospital, it has been possible for MSF teams to maintain and even expand their support – in spite of immense challenges, which include ongoing visa shortages. Today, around 100 people come to the hospital for treatment each day, with an average of 40 coming to the emergency room.

South Sudan: Thousands of returnees from Sudan are arriving in alarming health conditions

Humanitarian organisations must urgently scale up their response to ease the difficulties faced by people fleeing the conflict from Sudan to Upper Nile state in South Sudan, says Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). Thousands of returnees have been arriving sick and exhausted at the Bulukat transit centre in Malakal, north-eastern South Sudan, after travelling almost 72 hours by boats on the White Nile River. The Bulukat transit centre hosts about 5,000 people at any one time, many of them having to wait for weeks for onward transfers. People are without sufficient food, shelter or healthcare, as they live in temporary tents or out in the open during the rainy season.

After an explosion yesterday in a marketplace in Kostiantynivka, in the Donetsk region of Ukraine, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has been responding to urgent medical needs of people injured in the attack. At Kostiantynivka hospital, where MSF supports the Ministry of Health emergency department, 34 patients were admitted, with 15 of these classified as “red cases” requiring immediate lifesaving care.
