On 1 February, an artillery strike attributed to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) hit a market in Omdurman, Khartoum State, Sudan, causing a mass influx of wounded people to the Al Nao hospital, supported by Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF).

According to the Health Ministry, the attack left at least 54 dead and 158 injured, some of whom were taken to Al Nao hospital, the largest public hospital still operating in Omdurman, a suburb of Khartoum.

"There are wounded people lying everywhere in the emergency room and the doctors are doing what they can," said Chris Lockyear, MSF's secretary general on the scene at the time of the massive influx of wounded.

There are dozens and dozens of people with devastating injuries, the morgue is full of dead bodies."

Medical staff at Al Nao hospital described horrific scenes, with men and women of all ages injured and taken to the emergency room for treatment.

What I see in front of me is a scene of utter carnage, yet another tragic example of this relentless war on people.”

Al Nao hospital, supported by MSF, is located in Omdurman, in an area controlled by the Sudanese Armed Forces. MSF supports the hospital with essential medicines and medical supplies, technical support for logistics, water and sanitation, and food for patients.

In Sudan, MSF teams work in 11 of the country's 18 states. In recent months, continued attacks have forced MSF to suspend its medical activities in several hospitals in the Sudanese capital.
