Third earthquake struck Herat on 15 October

MSF supports the Herat Regional Hospital and managed the paediatric section. The hospital received over 100 injured, who are being treated alongside those admitted earlier in the week, with two reported fatalities.

MSF medical teams in the hospital have been attending to patients admitted in our tents since the earthquakes last week, with 77 still under our care. However, despite 17 patients being deemed ready for discharge on October 15, they refuse to leave as they have no homes to return to.

MSF teams are safe and our paediatric activities are continuing.

The population is very on edge and even before this earthquake many people were sleeping outside, in their cars, or in tents either because their homes had been destroyed or they did not want to stay inside.

With fewer tremors felt over the last few days, the people of Herat had been hopeful that the earthquakes were subsiding, allowing them to begin rebuilding their lives.
