Created in 1986, the Luxembourg section of Médecins Sans Frontières Luxembourg is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. Following the General Assembly held on 9 May, the Board of Directors was strengthened with the arrival of Dr Peter Firmenich and Ms Sophie Lambert Evans. As part of the international MSF movement, the organisation continues its humanitarian commitment.
Following the General Assembly of Médecins Sans Frontières Luxembourg on 9 May 2026, two new members were elected to the Council of Administration (CA): Dr Peter Firmenich and Ms Sophie Lambert Evans. Their arrival strengthens an already committed team composed of Dr Engy Ali, Dr Vic Arendt, Ms Jovana Arsenijovic, Dr Myriam Sommi, Ms Veerle Hermans, Dr Rony Zachariah, and Dr Christophe Walentiny.
The members of the Board also renewed their confidence in Dr Ali, who was reappointed President of MSF Luxembourg for a new term. President for the past two years, she will continue this work alongside the other CA members, many of whom have been involved with MSF Luxembourg for years.
Below is the new composition of the Council of Administration:
Dr Engy ALI: President
Dr Vic ARENDT: Vice-President
Ms Jovana ARSENIJOVIC: Member
Dr Peter FIRMENICH: Member
Ms Veerle HERMANS: Member
Ms Sophie LAMBERT EVANS: Secretary
Dr Myriam SOMMI: Member
Dr Christophe WALENTINY: Treasurer
Dr Rony ZACHARIAH: Member
My commitment to the principles of impartiality, neutrality, and independence stems from my deep attachment, over the past 25 years, to the missions and work of the MSF movement. I now wish to become more involved in the life of the Luxembourg section, help raise public awareness of MSF’s work, and contribute to defending human rights and humanitarian action.”
— Ms Sophie Lambert Evans, new Board member of MSF Luxembourg.

As a surgeon involved with MSF since 1996, both in the field, at headquarters, and within associative bodies in several countries, MSF is truly part of my life. Taking part in the major exhibition organised by MSF Luxembourg last March at Neimënster once again reminded me of the importance of communicating our values to secure the financial foundation of our work. It also reassured me of MSF’s place in Luxembourg, as well as internationally: a place worth defending, as the smallest section, with its own unique identity, within the great orchestra that the MSF movement has become over the years.”
— Dr Peter Firmenich, new Board member of MSF Luxembourg.
A special word of thanks goes to Ms Carine Lilliu, Mr Eslam Moustafa, and Mr Seydou Togo, who are leaving the Council of Administration. Their commitment, rigour, and kindness have greatly shaped our work in recent years.
MSF associations are independent legal entities registered under the laws of the countries in which they are established. Each elects its own Board of Directors and President. However, they are all part of the same international movement: Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). They are united by a shared commitment to the organisation’s charter and principles. MSF Luxembourg is one of the associations that make up the international movement.
40 years in Luxembourg
The Luxembourg section of MSF was created in 1986 and celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2026. Its 43 employees raise awareness among the population — particularly young people in the Grand Duchy — about humanitarian issues, collect the funds needed to finance interventions, support MSF volunteers deployed in the field, and conduct operational research studies to help improve MSF projects around the world.
In 2025, MSF Luxembourg brought together:
- 105 association members
- More than 22,000 active donors
- 9 Board members
- 43 employees (24.17 full-time equivalents)
- 58 volunteers
As part of a cinema debate evening at Utopia on 30 June, MSF Luxembourg will present its 2025 Activity Report.
