•    98% of Luxembourg’s municipalities count at least one MSF donor, according to the 2024 Annual Report.

•    Thanks to unprecedented generosity, regular donors account for one-third of our total fundraising.

Exceptional Luxembourgish solidarity

In 2024, the Luxembourg section of Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) raised €7.6 million, according to its annual activity report (in French, only). More than 98% of these funds came from private donations, contributed by nearly 24,000 active donors, including 8,941 regular supporters. MSF enjoys particularly widespread support in Luxembourg: 98% of municipalities count at least one donor.

MSF receives no public funding. This is a deliberate choice, driven by our concern for independence and an unwavering ethical commitment. In the field, we are sometimes the last, or even the only ones, to provide emergency medical aid—as in Sudan, the world’s largest humanitarian crisis. We place the highest importance on transparency with those who support us, and on the uncompromising rigor of our financial management. That is the best guarantee of your renewed trust.” — Esther Leick, Director of Communications and Fundraising.

In 2024, MSF Luxembourg saw its number of regular donors increase by 6%, with their contributions amounting to €2.3 million—representing one-third of our total fundraising. A total of 130 major donors collectively contributed €801,143. MSF also wishes to honor the memory of legacy donors who, by including MSF Luxembourg in their wills, enable us to continue our mission and save lives.

Our work depends on the strength of the collective, which is why it is essential for us to make our voice heard widely. Last year, we strengthened our impact in Luxembourg through operational research programmes and awareness-raising initiatives, particularly among younger generations. Our school interventions, mapathons, communication and fundraising campaigns, and increased media visibility allowed us to reach a broad audience.” — Engy Ali, President of MSF Luxembourg.

Growing humanitarian needs in an increasingly difficult context

In recent years, particularly in 2024 and 2025, there has been a sharp decline in humanitarian aid funding, leading to worsening needs in crisis-affected countries. While MSF is not directly affected financially at the global level, the organization is deeply concerned about this trend and reaffirms its commitment to providing independent and impartial medical assistance.

“Nothing we do would be possible without the support of those who stand by us,” stressed Thomas Kauffmann, Executive Director of MSF Luxembourg.

This takes on particular meaning today, as our independence from public funding proves more essential than ever. However, the drastic cuts in global humanitarian aid, notably in programs such as those of USAID, are a source of deep concern. We are often asked whether we can compensate for the withdrawal of other organizations, but the needs are so immense that it is absolutely impossible for us to fill the current and future gaps in international aid.”—  Thomas Kauffmann, Executive Director of MSF Luxembourg.

The major humanitarian challenges in 2024 included support for populations in Gaza and Sudan. In both conflicts, civilians, humanitarian workers, and infrastructure were regularly attacked. In Gaza alone, twelve MSF staff members were killed over the past twenty months. In addition, MSF staff have been attacked in other countries, including Ukraine and in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

Strong growth in international activities

Globally, MSF’s medical activities saw significant growth, according to the 2024 International Activity Report. MSF teams provided 16.4 million outpatient consultations and recorded 1.6 million hospital admissions. They also assisted with 368,900 deliveries, provided malaria treatment to more than 3.8 million patients, carried out more than 2.4 million admissions to emergency services, and conducted over 506,000 individual or group mental health support sessions.
