"Airstrikes are just continuing in Gaza city”

The situation is horrific, with massive Israeli and Palestinian casualties", says Matthias Kannes, MSF's head of mission in Gaza. "Our Palestinian colleagues are working day and night to cope with the influx of wounded. Following today’s bombing in Al Jabalia refugee camp, our team treated more than 50 people in Al Awda hospital.”
Early Saturday morning, October 7, the Palestinian militant group Hamas launched a major attack on various sites in Israel, firing rockets on multiple cities and taking hostages. The Israeli government declared war on Hamas and began a massive counteroffensive in Gaza, launching a barrage of air strikes. Authorities have reported more than 2,200 injuries and 300 deaths in Gaza and more than 2,000 injuries and 600 deaths in Israel.
Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has been running medical programmes in Gaza for more than 20 years, supporting a health system that is desperately short of medical staff and equipment. As we currently only run programmes in the Palestinian Territories, our reports are based on direct testimonies from our patients and staff in the field.
MSF does not run medical programmes in Israel, which has strong emergency and health services. MSF has offered assistance to the Israeli authorities and we stand ready to intervene at their request.
As an independent, impartial humanitarian organization, we call on all parties to the conflict to ensure the safety of civilians and medical facilities.
