Mobilization for MSF in Beckerich

Participating in this project was evident for the municipality of Beckerich, as its mayor, Thierry Lagoda, testifies: "In our regular budget, we allocate 0.7% for NGO projects, which corresponds to about 80,000 euros per year for international projects. We have another budget for national projects. So we have a certain affinity with NGOs, and especially with MSF, which does extremely important work around the world. As part of the "MSF dans les communes" partnership, which is a good opportunity to bring more visibility to MSF among the local population, we will donate 3,000 euros to MSF."

For the occasion, the chef of An der Millen, the restaurant located on site, had also proposed a special MSF menu. A gourmet meal, but above all one of solidarity, since part of the price will be donated to MSF.

Participants discovering the humanitarian field

Throughout the weekend, participants were able to discover the humanitarian field, its implications and the work of MSF through various events.

On Friday evening, 10 people attended the screening of the documentary Selfish, which looks at the reality of humanitarian work through the testimony of 40 workers in the field and their families. The screening was followed by a deep and moving discussion with Roberto Baldanza, a humanitarian worker with many years of experience in different countries around the world, who has just returned from Sierra Leone, where he was responsible for advocacy for MSF.

The film shown by MSF moved me a lot. The testimonies are impressively sincere and force one to admire all these women and men. [...] They dedicate their lives to others, far from their families. A lot of emotions.
Nadine, participant of the screening evening

A moment that allowed us to better understand the feelings of these men and women who are perceived as superheroes and who wonder how they manage to distance themselves from the horrors they often witness.

On Saturday and Sunday, the members of the ASBL D'Millen had set up an escape game on the theme of humanitarian aid. More than thirty people found themselves immersed in Africa, in the heart of an Ebola epidemic that had just broken out in a small village.

We regularly organize escape games on the site. As we know that this always works very well, we had the idea to suggest a special one for MSF. We received a scenario - 12 pages long! - from MSF and we thought about offering a family game, which is not too complicated to please children too.

Little ones and grown-ups alike put themselves in the shoes of MSF staff in order to stop the epidemic. Equipped with a stopwatch, a map and a walkie-talkie, the teams tried to solve the riddles of the escape game in less than an hour and to find the clues scattered on the site of the ASBL D'Millen. They had one objective: to find the vaccine to administer it to the sick patients as soon as possible and to stop the epidemic.

It was a great team game, we were all able to solve the puzzles together. It was great to get a glimpse of what the doctors on the field are doing to fight an epidemic like Ebola. You could go from one space to another, and also discover the whole site of the Millen.

Finally, the municipality of Beckerich hosts the "MSF, 50 years of humanity" photo exhibition on the site of the Millen. The exhibition is free and can be viewed until mid-August. Visitors can complete the exhibition by scanning the QR code, which will allow them to experience the sound and learn more about the 5 themes covered by the exhibition: conflict, natural disaster, pepople on the move, humanitarian commitment and medical action.
