On 1 August 2018, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) declared an outbreak of Ebola in the northeast, the second outbreak of the disease in the country of the year.

The outbreak, in DRC's northeastern North Kivu and Ituri provinces, is the country's second outbreak that started in 2018 and the country's tenth Ebola outbreak in 40 years. It is also the third epidemic since the end of the outbreak in West Africa in 2016 – and was declared less than one month since the previous outbreak, in nearby Equateur province, was declared over. The previous outbreak, which affected the city of Mbandaka, included 38 confirmed cases of Ebola and claimed 14 lives.
